Unlock your Iphone!

So i concluded that if you are reading this article, you want to unlock your Iphone to be able to use it with another network. Here is how you can do it.

Before you do that however, i need to remind you that once you connect to Itunes, it automatically checks your latest Iphone software update. It is strongly advisable to turn off the automatic update on your Itunes! Do NOT update to the latest version unless you are sure that ultrasnow is updated to cover the changes. As i mentioned in my earlier posts, it is not only about Jailbreaking (allowing installation of apps other than Itunes store ones) it is mainly about unlocking (I can really care less about apps from outside the Itunes store cause i have all what i need from there, but i want to able to use my phone with a mobile provider of my choice).

So, by updating to the last firmware for your Iphone, Apple smartly works on two components: The software version, and the modem firmware (Baseband). Although your Iphone can be still Jailbroken (Iphone software updated to version 4.1 for example) you will find out that it got locked again, and all what you will have is a fancy Ipod touch until a way is found to unlock it again.

Anyways, i learned the hard way so here is the easier way!

After installing limera1n and Cydia, you are almost set. Press Cydia to launch the application.

Select the Manage tab at the bottom of the screen

Select the Sources button

If the ultrasn0w repo is not present press the edit button at the top right of the screen.

Enter http://repo666.ultrasn0w.com/

Once the source is added, press the return to Cydia button

Press the done button at the top right of the screen.

Press to select repo666.ultrasn0w.com from the list.

Press to select the Ultrasn0w from the list of packages.

Press the install button at the top right of the screen, then press the confirm button at the top right of the screen.

After the completion of the installation, return to Cydia.

Press the home button then the power off button and slide to turn off your Iphone. Press the start button to power on again.

The Iphone may take some time to get back on but don’t worry because you already unlocked it and can use the SIM of your choice!

Jailbreaking with limera1n

I used limera1n with my windows PC. I really don’t know how it works with Mac but I will research it if needed. Download limera1n like you download any software. My suggestion is to save it. You can save it on your desktop or wherever you usually save your downloads.

Double click the limera1n.exe file to launch the application. Your Iphone needs to be connected via USB when you perform this action.

Click the make it ra1n button when it appears.

Your phone is now in recovery mode.

Press both the home and power buttons (on your Iphone)

When the Sotware asks you, release the power button.

The screen will show that your phone is in DFU mode

As the software performs it task, you will see an image of a lime raindrop on your Iphone.

When the Software is done, it will let you know.

After you power back your Iphone, you will see a new icon on your Springboard called limera1n. Press it to continue.

Once limera opens, select Cydia then press Install button at the top right of the screen.

Once Cydia installation is complete, reboot your iphone. When your Iphone restarts press the Cydia icon and let it update.

Your Iphone is now Jailbroken and you can download Apps and themes via Cydia. You can research Cydia further over the internet, it works fine for me 🙂

How about the unlocking? This will come in my next post as unlocking is a hassle on its own.

Jailbreak or unlock Iphone, a mess for newbies.

I just wanted to be able to use my Iphone in a different country with a different provider. I don’t think I was asking for too much since I paid the full price for it. Apple however, did not make that an option. I had to resort to another solution. After paying for an unlocking service, and found out it didn’t help, I decided to research on my own.

As any newbie, I got slammed with a series of words that I am not accustomed to. I am not an Iphone professional, let alone the terminology used to unlock it. I want my phone unlocked! By unlocked I mean being able to use it with an operator other than AT&T, as simple as that!

Well guess what? I got the term unlocked right! 🙂

I will not go through my paid experience to unlock my Iphone because it was nothing but a scam and I will definitely not suggest the site to any of my friends. However, I also do not appreciate the attitude of some so called Iphone savvies who make fun of all of us newbies when we pay to unlock or are unsuccessful doing it.

Jailbreaking is one of the terms I was introduced to. In my simple understanding, Jailbreaking is the ability to add an application to your Iphone that is not supported (did not make it) into Itunes. There are hundreds of applications and themes out there that can be as useful if not more useful than some Itunes apps for Iphone. The Jailbreaking applies term applies to Iphone, Ipod, and Ipad as far as I understood.

In order to unlock your Iphone, you have to Jailbreak it first. You will need to be able to install an application that is not found on Itunes. Forget about all the terminology that you would see describing the process and how the software works in hidden files and such. I am not looking into becoming a programmer and I don’t think that’s your aim either!

In my next article, I will try to guide you through the installation of limera1n (I am not using the weird terminology, it is the names for the software/program)
